The major factors in selecting golf club are your height, arm length, and swing speed. Let's take a look at each factor.

Height. If you are tall, you probably have a more upright swing and the lie of the clubs need to be adjusted. A club's lie is determined by the angle the club head extends from the shaft. Usually the shafts of clubs with an upright lie come into the club head from 11 o'clock comparing to the 9 or 10 o'clock of normal lie clubs. If you think of yourself in profile, holding a golf club at rest on the ground, where shaft connects to the club head is like a hinge. For a taller golfer with an upright swing, that hinge needs to be closed a little bit. For a shorter golfer, it needs to be opened.

Arm length. Arm length is the major factor that determines how long your shafts need to be. You should be able to reach naturally toward the ground. You should not be crouching to hit the ball. A club fitter will measure your arm length much like a tailor or dressmaker would do. With your arms at your sides, the distance between the tip of your middle finger and the ground determines how long or short your shafts should be.

Swing speed. If you are a younger, stronger person, you probably have more swing speed than someone who is a little older or a little smaller. How hard you swing the club determines what kind of shafts your clubs should have. And the flexibility of the shafts comes with at the expense of accuracy. Most professional golfers will swing hard enough to hit the ball and they usually don't need the extra whip of a flexible shaft. For average golfers, steel or graphite shaft will regular flex would help you get more distance.

If you are only going to play occasionally, you can buy golf clubs from the local sporting goods store or golf shop. Those clubs are designed for average golfer and they don't cost a lot and still have good quality. When you select golf clubs, consider the three factors, your height, arm length, and swing speed. If you like to play golf a lot, having customized clubs will be a good idea. The club fitter will help you find what kind of specialized clubs are most appropriate for you.
